The Fisherman's Garden is sponsored by The Unitarian Universalists of Caldwell County. Our church met for several years at the community library and in 2010 purchased the property located at 105 Virginia St., Lenoir, NC. The house located on the property was renovated and became our spiritual home . In 2011, the adjacent property was purchased.

Early this year a gardening project was proposed which became The Fisherman's Garden. Construction of the garden began in February of 2012, and the amazing garden depicted in these photographs has rapidly become a centerpiece of our out-reach to the community.

As of the beginning of July 2012, over 200 pounds of food have been donated to local food charities and the pace of production has exploded as the heat of summer has set in.

We have helped several families start gardens at their homes, and continue to develop our program with the wise words of Lao Tzu always in mind.

"Give a man a fish; he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish; he will eat for life."

Sponsorship Program

Our sponsorship program helps families in need to start a garden at their home at little or no cost. We provide locally sourced materials, soil, amendements, man-power, seeds, starter plants, and mentors. We ask that sponsored families make a commitment to help other sponsored families by providing labor for installations.

Mentors help to encourage gardeners, providing advice, and helping to feed and maintain the garden through follow-up visits.

We accept referrals from community aid groups, churches and gardening groups in addition to direct requests from those in need for help in starting gardens. We can accommodate special needs and will design gardens for individuals with disabilities or physical limitations.

We also accept requests for help in starting gardens for familes or individuals who can afford to pay their own way at a reasonable price to help defray the cost of sponsoring families in need.

The goal of the Fisherman's Garden is to teach individuals and families in our community how to start gardens at their homes, building food resilience. The church garden is an educational tool designed to demonstrate a variety of gardening techniques. We also provide sponsorships for families in need, providing materials, man-power, and mentors to help them start home gardens.
